The Aarhus Open-Air Folk Museum (Den Gamle By – “The Old City”) could be one of my favorite folk museums ever — most show country life, buildings, and farms going back a century or more. In contrast, Aarhus’ museum shows life in the city 100 – 300 years ago.
Ærø is perfect for bike riding! On Wednesday June 27, 2018 we did our best to follow Rick Steves’ guided ride and biked for about 4 hours. We loved it so much that we rented bikes again on Thursday, and used them for 7 hours! Bike rentals are about $10 each for the whole day.
The idyllic island of Ærø, and its historic town Ærøskøbing, are your vacation away from your vacation. Ærøskøbing is known to be the best-preserved medieval town in Denmark – some of the buildings date back to the 1600s; many are from the 1700s. Key sights in town are walkable, and the 22-mile x 6-mile island is a delight on a bike.
Odense’s open-air folk museum (Den Fynske Landsby – The Funen Village) is like exploring countryside life in Hans Christian Andersen’s time. Funen is Denmark’s middle, and it’s smallest island – and the Village showcases 28 Funen island farms and buildings dating back to the 1800s and slightly before.

Keswick has several gorgeously scenic bus rides – here’s some info about two of the most popular and beautiful.
Keswick (pop. 5,000, with gorgeous green slate buildings) was our vacation from our vacation. Our AirBnB was my favorite of our trip – we could hear and see sheep in the fields behind us; the place has gorgeous views; and it’s just a five-minute walk from the pedestrian center of town, and a 15-minute walk from Derwentwater, the third largest lake in the district. Tuesday June 19 was one of those days that with a lot of luck, everything fit perfectly into place – an open-top bus ride; an open-top boat ride, and lunch in the Christianborg Palace Tower.
Christian Holm Donatsky has been leading enjoyable history-focused walking tours for 15 years. We took his June/July “Kings’ Copenhagen” tour covering the period from 1600-1800 – wars, fires, scandals, and all kinds of interesting stuff.
If you’re at Rosenborg Castle, there are two free gems, across two different streets from the Castle – the Botanical Gardens, and the Reformed Church.
